Rincón de Soto Pears

The area’s economy has its historic roots in agriculture and the producers of Rincón de Soto Pears apply their hard work, know-how and traditional practices and techniques to their orchards. Thinning and pruning is still done by hand, to ensure that the pear trees produce the right amount of fruit of an appropriate size and sweetness while ensuring appropriate structure and balance.

The orchards are not irrigated during flowering or prior to harvesting —except when authorised due to drought conditions— to make sure that fruit quality remains unaltered.

The ripening period is of particular importance, as the process undergone by the fruit is essential to achieve a quality product and long preservation in perfect condition.

Because of this, pears are picked manually and only after their attaining optimal size, colour, pull resistance and pulp consistency.

The only pears to be harvested are those that are free of spots and deformities and have the minimum size set out in Designation regulations. The fruit is pulled at the intersection between the peduncle and the branch, gripping the fruit at its base. The peduncle left on the fruit should be rounded, so it does not damage adjoining pears.
