Pears are not only good for the palate and for gastronomy, but also for one’s health, thanks to their nutritional properties. They have large amounts of water and fibre and very few calories, so nutritional experts recommend them in their weight loss diets. They also contain many vitamins, including vitamin B1, essential for the metabolism, nervous system and mental activity; vitamin B2, very important during growth stages; and vitamin C, which helps form collagen, stimulates defences and helps absorb intestinal iron. It also contains beta-carotene —which protects the skin and sight and helps increase defences— and potassium, which regulates the water balance in the body and enhances muscular function. Among other minerals, pears also contain calcium and phosphorus, essential for the bones; magnesium, which helps prevent high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia; iron, which prevents anaemia; and sulphur, which helps metabolise lipids and carbohydrates. |
